The Bible and British government

"The Bible is profoundly ambivalent about government," writes Julian Rivers, Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Bristol.

Jesus himself taught that government is both legitimate and limited.

The Bible challenges each government and its citizens on four key principles - equality, legality, diffusion and accountability. These political values can still be seen in the British political system.

The chapter on this by Professor Rivers in 'God and Politics' (edited by Nick Spencer and Jonathan Chaplin, SPCK, 2009) appears in an edited version in Transmission, the termly magazine of the Bible Society, Click here to read the article "Government in the Bible" (pdf format).
